Adding on to my last post, I just wanted to note another level whereby freedom is not all it seems to be, nor is the American love of it. It strikes me that, in America, we don't even tend to desire a measure of freedom which differentiates us terribly from slaves. We want the freedom to choose what job we have, but not a freedom not to choose a job. We want the freedom to practice whatever religion we want, but not a freedom to do so without persecution. We have a system just as supressive of any real freedom of action as the most totalitarian government, but living within it, we've convinced ourselves that this is actually freedom.
