If you pay any attention to the infotainment networks, you have doubtless come across Terri Schiavo, the brain dead chick from Florida. There's a site on the internet devoted to completely skewing the entire issue in favor of keeping a tube down her throat, pumping her full of what I can only assume is Cream of Wheat with extra sugar. But the jist is: this woman has been brain dead for 15 years, and every court ever has stated that her family's wishes to remove her feeding tube and let her die need to be supported.
So, the US Congress, having solved every other problem ever, convened in an emergency session to debate passing some sort of resolution that would ask a Federal judge to hear the case. MSNBC has some interesting quotes relating to the case. For example:
""In cases like this one, where there are serious questions and substantial doubts, our society, our laws and our courts should have a presumption in favor of life," Bush said in a statement after signing the bill."
This would, of course, be a more believable sentiment from a president who wasn't so ravenously pro-death penalty, even in cases where there are... you know, like... substantial doubts about the guilt of the person being killed. And that whole war thing? Turns out people die!
But beyond that, you just have to love the symbolism here. The Republicans, who want to cut Social Security benefits and would, if they had their way, kill welfare entirely, are chomping at the fucking bit to literally shove food down this woman's throat. To recap: able to feel pain and starving, we don't care. A fetus or a corpse with a pulse, life is sacrosanct.
